Tech:NYC is committed to the state’s economic resilience and ensuring all New Yorkers can benefit from our industry’s continued growth. As a whole, the tech sector represents over 330,000 jobs in New York, with more than 161,000 classified as high-tech jobs.
To expedite New York’s recovery while attracting and retaining tech investment for the long-term, we propose the following policy goals.
Education
Expand access to “Computer Science for All” education by increasing the number of teachers trained in computer science (CS) throughout New York State.
Develop a statewide CS after school program curriculum and make it available for all public school students.
Create an annual review process for the state’s CS curriculum to guarantee adoption of the most current coding techniques and culturally responsive teaching methods.
Require a CS component for all graduating New York State high school seniors.
Tech Career Pipeline
Grow the tech career entry pipeline by establishing an array of entry-level job opportunity programs and training certificates through public-private partnerships, including CUNY, SUNY, and other prominent local education institutions.
Maintain an inventory of all tech career training centers throughout the state that is readily accessible and promoted to all stakeholders.
Invest in partnerships with career training providers to build new tech training centers in regions without one presently.
Cultural Richness
Support New York’s primary quality of life anchors, including restaurants, bars, parks, and public spaces through direct public assistance and targeted collaboration with willing firms.
Support cultural and artistic institutions through special events, product partnerships, and recovery initiatives.
Economic Development
Encourage equitable, large-scale economic development projects that bring tech jobs to New York City’s outer boroughs and all parts of New York State.
Spur tech job creation by protecting state and local tax incentives for headcount creation outside of Manhattan.
Support New York’s existing tech ecosystem and growing startup culture by advocating for legislation that allows tech to reach its full potential in New York.
Increase awareness of the tech sector’s importance to New York’s current economic survival, eventual recovery, and long term future through more legislative compromise and public policy consultation on issues directly affecting tech.
Public Sector Modernization
Mandate all new public sector data systems utilize cloud technology and complete the migration of remaining state and local data systems on legacy servers to the cloud.
Prioritize and robustly invest in cybersecurity.
Mobilize the expertise and resources of the tech sector to enhance digital functionality for existing public sector websites and online services.
Create a standard for digital platform development, maintenance, and upgrades for all public facing social services, licensing programs, and economic development awards.
